Some speaking engagements stay with you long after the event ends.
Recently, I had the opportunity to lead a leadership communication workshop for Metro Physical & Aquatic Therapy's Directors Conference. While I arrived hoping to share ideas around communication, connection, and impact, I left inspired by the people, culture, and purpose that Metro has built.
What I didn't expect was that one comment from an attendee would become the moment everyone remembered.
From the moment the conference began, there was something different about the energy in the room. The team members weren't simply showing up for another meeting. They were engaged, invested, and genuinely committed to the work they do and the people they serve.
Culture is one of those words that gets used frequently in business, but it's much harder to create than it is to talk about. Metro has clearly built something special. The sense of purpose, collaboration, and commitment to one another was evident throughout the conference and in every conversation.
It's no surprise that Metro continues to experience remarkable growth. Organizations don't grow because of facilities, processes, or marketing alone. They grow because people believe in the mission and feel connected to something bigger than themselves.
One moment from the workshop stood out above all others.
As we wrapped up the session, a physical therapist stood up and shared something that stopped the room.
He explained that he had been doing this work for five years. While he always knew he enjoyed helping people, he had never fully connected his daily responsibilities to a larger purpose. Through the workshop discussions and reflections, he said he finally understood why he does what he does.
"I understand my purpose now."
You could feel the impact of that statement throughout the room.
For me, it was a powerful reminder that communication isn't just about delivering information. At its best, communication helps people see themselves differently. It helps them reconnect with their values, their purpose, and the impact they have on others.
That moment wasn't about a keynote or a workshop. It was about a professional recognizing the significance of the work he does every day and the lives he helps change.
I'm grateful to the entire Metro team for the opportunity to spend time with such an incredible group of leaders and professionals. Thank you for your engagement, your openness, and your commitment to serving others.
And thank you for the reminder that when people connect to purpose, extraordinary things can happen.
